The Apceros (アプケロス, apukerosu) is a small Herbivore introduced in the original Monster Hunter.

Physiology and Abilities

The Apceros is a herbivore monster that generally inhabits deserts and volcanic regions. It has a bulky, sturdy body with a thick armor shell on its back. Its stiff tail is tipped with a spiked club, and another pair of spikes jut out from the sides of its head. They are often encountered in groups.

Apceros are territorial and will attempt to repel intruders by headbutting and tail-slamming them. A group of Apceros can also take on a defensive formation where the tails are raised outwards, creating a protective barrier against attacks.

Apceros are known to build nests out in the open, and their eggs are large and nutritious. Due to this, hunters are often tasked with gathering Apceros eggs. Unsurprisingly, Apceros become quite aggressive after noticing the theft of an egg.

While Old World Apceros are fairly confrontative and will actively attack Hunters, the Apceros populations found in the New World are more docile, only attacking once provoked.

General Notes
  • Apceros will approach any hunter it sees slowly, and then try to headbutt them. They can also run faster to attack.
Monster Hunter: World
  • Apceros no longer pursue hunters, and will only attack back when attacked.
  • When provoked by a nearby large monster, Apceros will form a ring with their brethren, attempting to protect each other with their tails.
  • Downy Crakes will sometimes spawn on an Apceros' back, where a Ghillie Mantle is recommended to sneak in and catch them.

  • In a Double Kinship Attack with two Apceros, they have a unique animation where they spin on their backs, circling and closing in on their target.
  • Downy Crakes once again can spawn on an Apceros' back, but cannot be caught like other Endemic Life in the game.
