The Paralyzing Scavenger Great Girros (ドスギルオス, dosugiruosu) is a Fanged Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter: World.
Physiology and Abilities
This monster is covered in black and gray scales which help it blend in with the darkness of the locales it inhabits, supporting its hit-and-run scavenger lifestyle.
Its head is adorned with a cobra-like hood, which is vital for the monster's survival as it used not only to command its pack via sound, but also to attract females and filter the effluvium using gills.
Great Girros is known for its paralyzing abilities, their large frontal fangs are loaded with a powerful neurotoxin similar to that of a Gendrome, despite their slender form, these monsters are quite sturdy and know how to use their bodies to overwhelm enemies.

Known habitat: Rotten Vale
The agile Great Girros competes with other monsters in the Rotten Vale for carrion, its primary food source, and tends to proactively retreat to avoid conflict. This could be because there is a surplus of food available in the vale, or it could be adept at discerning the threat an opponent poses. When it does find unclaimed live prey, it must coordinate its pack of Girros efficiently to bring it down quickly. The Great Girros takes the lead, trying to paralyze the target while the pack surrounds it to prevent escape. It vibrates its gills to produce a far-travelling, high-pitched sound signalling to the pack, and even other nearby Girros, to attack. Ultimately, the Great Girros concludes the hunt with a finishing bite.
The Great Girros' gills are highly specialized and well developed. Beyond signaling to their pack, they are also used to attract females who choose a mate based on their courtship calls. This leads males to target enemy gills in conflicts, often leaving them covered in fresh wounds. The Great Girros' territory is polluted with clouds of effluvium. Despite normally breathing through its mouth or noise, it can breath with its cilia lined gills to filter out effluvium. Whenever a monster falls into the Rotten Vale or an Elder Dragon with a lot of energy dies, the effluvium concentration in the vale increases, further increasing its reliance on this adaptation.
Developer's Note: The developers already had the design for Girros and leveled it up to make Great Girros, giving it the vibrating gills to allow it to lead the pack. It has a strong immune system that protects it from effluvium. The team recognizes it as the weakest monster in the Rotten Vale, but they like giving weaker monsters (like Pukei-Pukei or Tzitzi-Ya-Ku) status effects to motivate players to hunt them and make their weapons to to help deal with more powerful monsters.
