Description
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne | |
---|---|
Paolumu feast on eggs found in the Coral Highlands. They are able to propel through the air using unique sacs in their bodies, and attack with their extremely hard tails. Useful Information: Paolumu can't move around as freely when its air sacs are deflated. Aim for its inflated body parts, or purposefully draw out its attacks that use up stored air, to gain the upper hand. |

Monster Hunter World: The Official Complete Works
From Pages 248-253:
Full length: approximately 1143.36 cm
Full height: approximately 348.91 cm
Foot size: approximately 137 cm
Known habitat: Coral Highlands
Most of Paolumu's body is covered in a soft down, with a long neck and an even longer, flat tail that makes up about half of its body length. It has proportionally less wing surface area than is typical of monsters, as well as digit-like structures on its inner wings. These features imply that Paolumu's wings evolved from arms as its neck pouch developed. Its tail is made up of an elastic core surrounded by hard protrusions. This structure allows Paolumu to change the shape and length of its tail as it whips it through the air to attack opponents while in flight. Its tail is heaviest at the tip, which helps it to maintain balance while flying. Some parts of Paolumu's skin contain a rubbery substance that make them extremely elastic, but also desirable for crafting both hunting equipment and hot-air balloons.
Paolumu can inhale air to expand its especially elastic neck pouch until it's wider than its body, though it only does so when it's both flying and threatened by an enemy. This behavior is likely intended to make it appear more intimidating. In this inflated state it can expel air to quickly change course or even hinder the movement of enemies by blasting them with a sharp gust. Paolumu can ride the upwelling winds of the Coral Highlands to fly longer and more stealthily than other monsters. It has large ears, but is unaffected by Screamer Pods. Combined with its ability to quickly navigate the complex terrain of the highlands, scholars speculate that it uses ultrasonic echolocation.
Once or twice a day, Paolumu fly at low altitudes to feast on land-coral eggs. It inhales large amounts of air filled with the eggs, exhales the air, then repeats. This process goes on for some time so that it can get sufficient nutrition from such small eggs. It spends most of its time in the central plateaus of the region, avoiding conflict. Unlike most monsters, Paolumu does not retreat to its nest to rest from combat. While it nests in a lower region of the highlands, it flees to areas with large coral domes that it can fly in and out of erratically to confuse and surprise its target. This is likely a conscious strategy on its part.
Developer's Note: Paolumu was intended to add variety to the combat of the game The team accomplished this by giving it a unique floating style of flight that also allowed it to attack with its tail in a way different from other monsters. This was then all tied together with its design and ecology.
