Physiology and Abilities
Description
Monster Hunter Now | |
---|---|
Characteristics: A fanged wyvern that darts around the thickets of its forested nest. It generates static electricity by brushing its fur across the ground and nearby trees. When a sufficient amount of friction has been built up, it enters into an "electrified" state where its body hairs begin to emit light and stand on end. Be especially wary of its head and tail when it takes on this appearance. Useful Information: Deftly moving in all directions, it can stealthily launch unseen attacks from your blind spots. Habitats: Forest, Swamp |

Known habitat: Ancient Forest
Tobi-Kadachi is covered with electrically insulating skin and scales, with a topmost layer of feather-like scales running from its head along its back. These softer scales can be rubbed together when Tobi-Kadachi shakes its body, or by brushing against the surrounding environment to build up static electricity. This latter behavior doubles as a territory marking, leaving some scales behind. The static electricity is stored in electrodes nestled within its coat, building charge when agitated until the coat and even electrodes are standing on end. With electricity arcing between them, they're now ready to discharge into an enemy. This discharge can be powerful enough to render opponents unconscious. The larger a Tobi-Kadachi's tail is the stronger the individual is, as this additional surface area allows it to build up more electrical charge. It's also speculated that tail size plays a role in attracting a mate.
Tobi-Kadachi are typical found among the treetops, darting from branch to branch. Their agility enables this otherwise challenging lifestyle, using their sharp claws to grip to tree limbs. They sharpen these claws, leaving marks in high spots within the forest that also serve to mark its territory. Their claws may be so precious to its mobility that preserving them is the reason behind its preference for biting and tail-based attacks. Tobi-Kadachi's agility is further augmented by webbing that stretches between its legs, supported and extended by needle-shaped cartilage. Gliding with this webbing is silent, and supports it in its tendency to attack targets from behind. Its bite is enhanced by rows of fangs within its mouth, as well as fang-like scale protrusion outside its jaw.
Tobi-Kadachi has often been observed hunting but very rarely eating, and it's speculated that this could be due to it being a rare event, enabled by a low metabolism and energy efficient movements. A membrane in the corner of its mouth allows its jaw to unhinge, so it is certainly capable of consuming large prey. There is also little information on juveniles or breeding habits, though we know it to lead a mostly solitary life.
Developer's Note: Tobi-Kadachi was designed to use its agility to make players uncomfortable again now that they're likely learning the basics of combat, forcing them to learn how to deal with combos and more complex movement. Tobi-Kadachi was always intended have a unique ecology, living in the treetops. The team wanted an electricity based monster to enable players to make thunder weapons. They started with a catfish style design, but pivoted to something more like a snake with legs to enable it to move easily in its habitat.
