Physiology and Abilities
Description
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne | |
---|---|
The apex monster of the Coral Highlands, whose diet primarily consists of Raphinos. It emits a chilling wind from its body, which dulls its prey's ability to escape.. Useful Information: The membrane that covers its entire body enables Legiana to move with incredible speed. Damaging this membrane should help with slowing it down. Poison attacks have also been known to be effective. |

Known habitat: Coral Highlands
Special webbing on Legiana's head, wings and tail to help it maneuver unstable updrafts in the complex terrain of the Coral Highlands. A muscle within the webbing allows it to be folded when on the ground and expanded to take flight. It's likely that Legiana is one of the most graceful fliers in the New World, granting it the title of "Lord of the Coral Highlands". Damage to its membranes compromises its balance in flight. Poison also worsens its sense of balance along with its physical strength, which combined with its low resistance to the ailment makes it a recommended tactic for hunters.
Legiana typically hunts in the morning hours while airborne, feeding only once per day to maintain a consistent body weight for precision flying. Its preferred prey is Raphinos, and it often targets flocks of them. It flies above them in a blindspot, from which it can nosedive to snatch them out of the air and feast while still in flight. Its leg bones and claws are specialized for clutching. Legiana always tries to remain above its target, allowing it to attack with these well adapted limbs. It sharpens its essential claws on land coral dozens of times a day while patrolling, which also serves to mark its territory.
Legiana nests and lives at the peak of the highlands, and when not hunting it is typically patrolling its territory. This territory consists of the upper areas, and it rarely ventures lower than that. It is extremely territorial, displaying fierce aggression towards intruders. This threatening display includes a high-pitched cry that travels long distances, warning both current and potential trespassers.
Legiana has a freezing sac that secretes a fluid from the blue portions of its body that's capable of freezing water. It can use this fluid to blast freezing air at difficult to catch prey or enemies. Outside of combat, Legiana may surround itself with a thin frozen mist just to prevent a dangerous over-accumulation of the fluid.
Developer's Note: The team had three intentions with Legiana: they wanted to introduce the standard difficulty level, establish a tempo, and create gameplay where both hunter and monster could use updrafts. Legiana's unique design, including its jet fighter-like wing flaps, enabled it to be more maneuverable in the air than other Flying Wyverns. They felt this design differentiated it from Rathalos by being more streamlined. They also wanted to show that even such a powerful monster can be preyed upon, so they incorporated it into the Rotten Vale.
