The Toxic Spitter Pukei-Pukei (プケプケ, Pukepuke) is a Bird Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter: World.
Physiology and Abilities
Pukei-Pukei are medium sized bird wyverns known by their light green scales and manes of vivid green feathers. They have yellow eyeballs, orange cheeks, a long sticky tongue, and deep green cresting adorning its head. Pukei-Pukei have rubbery four-pronged wings with visible bones to each end, as well as some feathers and a spike on their wing arms. They have thin, multi colored tails.
Its scales and feathers will shift towards red coloring to intimidate foes and portray anger, as well as dullen to appear lesser than, and portray tiredness. Pukei-Pukei's cheeks will expand upon eating berries, and its tail massively inflates when filled with toxic fumes.
Pukei-Pukei are capable of attacking with their long elastic tongues, can spit poison out of its mouth, and spew poison fog out of its tail. Should it eat from certain berry plants, that toxic spit can crackle on impact and stun its foes.

Monster Hunter World: The Official Complete Works
From Pages 210-215:
Full length: approximately 1102.23 cm
Full height: approximately 338.27 cm
Foot size: approximately 148 cm
Known habitat: Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste
The Pukei-Pukei's feathers are covered in fine crystalline particles that cause them to change color depending on how they're angled. This allows it to alter its natural green camouflage in the event its environment changes: to appear larger and red to intimidate other monsters, or to appeal smaller and pale as it attempts to flee more fearsome threats. These modes of coloration reflect its varying behaviors in the face of intruders depending on the danger they pose. It is able to rapidly assess intruders with its large eyes, said to contain many more color-receptor cells than those of other creatures, that are capable of differentiating between many colors even in the dark.
Pukei-Pukei's feet are well adapted for grasping and holding. Though this would seem to suit it for a life among the treetops, clutching to round branches, it spends most of its time on the forest floor. It is speculated that its territory used to be in the canopy, but that it was forced lower by the migration of Rathalos to the New World long ago. It still returns to the canopy today during breeding season to find a Mernos nest with a vacant parent. There, it will lay its own egg in the nest. Upon hatching, the Pukei-Pukei chick will instinctively push out the Mernos eggs and receive exclusive care from its unwitting Mernos caretaker before leaving the nest to learn to fly and seek out vegetation for food.
Pukei-Pukei's tongue can stretch to be longer than four meters thanks to a well-developed hyoid and surrounding muscles. This tongue is so strong that a single person cannot forcibly stretch it. It uses this tongue both to attack invaders from a distance and to snatch food. Pukei-Pukei primarily eats plants, including Poisoncups, Sporepuffs, and Scatternuts. It will also store these plants in its elastic chin and tail, where it can mix them with a fluid produced in its poison sacs. Depending on the stored plant, the resulting mixture will have a variety of properties, from the mist-like spray from Sporepuffs to bursting poison bubbles from Scatternuts. It has even been been known to store rocks in its chin to spray at adversaries. When an internalized poisonous mixture is given time to ferment, it produces a toxic vapor that is stored in Pukei-Pukei's expanding tail to release from the tip as a last resort in combat. These behaviors, while providing both sustenance and defense, also assist the consumed plants in germinating and spreading around the environment. This may be why the areas around Pukei-Pukei nests have so many varieties of plants.
Developer's Note: Pukei-Pukei was originally intended to be the basic tutorial monster for new players, but that role went to Great Jagras instead. Instead, its purpose became teaching players to be more aware of their surroundings, especially vegetation and slinger ammunition, and how they can utilize them in combat. Its actions are designed to be exaggerated so players can easily read its intent. Its colors and changing form based on its emotion all help to serve this goal.
