The Great Jagras is an adult male Jagras that leads its pack. As male Jagras mature, they leave their pack to live alone. Those that survive this solitary lifestyle eventually return to their pack to battle the leader in an attempt to replace them. A Great Jagras is visually differentiated from its pack mates by its large size and the mane-like crest decorating its head and back, the length of which may be used to help estimate the age of a given individual. Its pack mates will typically let the Great Jagras deal with intruders, but will also rush to its aid when needed. Despite this, there have been reports of Great Jagras preying on their Jagras pack, sending them hiding amidst the treetops.
Both The Great Jagras' crest and the large scales beneath its eardrum help it to stand out during mating season, with larger scales seeming to be more attractive to females. During mating season, Great Jagras battle each other to court females. They breed with each female they court, and it is estimated that one Great Jagras will have ten to twenty female Jagras mates, each of whom will deposit three to four eggs in a warm area of mulch. The females do not incubate these eggs, and they can be stolen by monsters like Kulu-Ya-Ku.
The Great Jagras' stomach is both extremely flexible and filled with a powerful acid; a combination of traits that allows it prey on Aptonoths and herbivorous wyverns by swallowing and digesting them whole. While its stomach is full with prey it is considerably slowed and less aggressive, but if needed it can also use this expanded portion of its body as a crushing weapon against enemies. The Great Jagras regularly regurgitates partially digested meals on its own accord (even using it as a projectile weapon), though this can also be caused by impacts to its distended gut. This regurgitation maximizes its nutritional absorption by allowing The Great Jagras to find and digest new prey, while also providing food for its Jagras pack which prefers the higher nutritional content of the partially digested meals from their leader over their usual prey of Shepherd Hares or other small animals. The large quantities of powerful acid produced by a Great Jagras can even break down the walls of its own stomach, giving it a hunger that is believed to be comparable to much larger monsters and driving it to aggressively search for prey whenever its stomach is empty.
Developer's Note: The Great Jagras received much more development effort than other monsters its size. By implementing its changing physique, ecological behaviors, movements, and visual details the team tested the limits of what they could do in Monster Hunter World. Their goal was to create a monster that is easy for new players to land hits on and to pull them into the environment.
