The Rock Gorging Glutton Dodogama (ドドガマル, dodogamaru) is a Fanged Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter: World.
Physiology and Abilities
Description
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne | |
---|---|
A monster that devours rock as its primary diet. The Crystals it devours mix with its saliva to produce explosive minerals that it can spit at its enemies. Useful Information: Dodogama collects explosive materials in its mouth, but doing so weakens its massive jaw. Causing the minerals to detonate while they're still in Dodogama's mouth will create a great opening for attack. |

Known habitat: Elder's Recess
Dodogama was first discovered in the Elder's Recess, where it can often be observed munching on rocks. It is specifically looking for the crystals that litter the locale, as they are rich in Elder Dragon Bioenergy. Dodogamas feeding strategy involves scooping up large quantities of rock with its reinforced, expandable jaw and letting the mixture sit in its mouth for a time, where it gradually heats up. It might not be appropriate to call this "eating" in the traditional sense - the Dodogama performs a chemical reaction in its mouth that breaks down and extracts the energy that originally formed these crystals. Once it is done, the waste product - a hot mess of scrap rocks - can simply be spat out. This rocky mass is highly explosive as a result of reacting with the wyverns saliva, and the Dodogama uses this property as a weapon, spewing the combustible mixture all over its enemies in a pinch. Of course, the Dodogama must be careful - the reaction starts in its maw, and should it suffer any strong blows to the head, the mixture could detonate while still inside the wyverns mouth!
A highly specialized lifestyle has given the Dodogama a highly specialized body. Its most obvious physical feature is its massive jaw, which makes up 30% of the creatures size. It is lined in an alternating, vertical pattern of extremely hard rigid scales and soft, elastic skin. This construction enables the jaws primary function: After scooping up rock to process, the chemical reaction is highly exothermic, and releases a lot of heat. To properly account for that and avoid distortion and warping of its shell, the Dodogama expands its jaw to make space for the expanding heated mass. The elastic skin stretches and makes space, while the rigid scale columns provide protection and resilience. But the generated heat poses a threat not just to the jaw, but to the entire creature. The Dodogamas body temperature is already high, and if the heat from its mouth is allowed to accumulate indefinitely, it will kill the wyvern. And yet, the Dodogama has no dedicated thermoregulatory organs. Instead, its belly is equipped with extra skin that can be extended at will. These skin flaps increase the Dodogamas contact surface with the cold rocky floor of the Elder's Recess and thus serves as a unique cooling mechanism.
The Dodogama is quite unlike its closest equivalents of other regions, the Great Jagras and the Great Girros. For one, the Dodogama is a powerful, fierce fighter. It is often underestimated due to sharing its habitat with Elder Dragons, but that should tell you exactly how unusually tough this wyvern is. While it wont pay much mind to anything smaller than itself, disturbing the Dodogama will cause to attack relentlessly. Using its explosive projectiles, it makes short work of any annoyance. The Dodogama also notably does not form packs like the Jagras and the Girros do. This might be a result of its diet - when you eat rocks and don't hunt, the benefits of pack life are severely diminished. Despite these differences, the Dodogama is considered to be a relative of the Jagras that specialized for live in the Recess. However, a recent hypothesis has presented an alternative evolutionary history: Some researchers of the commission believe that the Dodogama may actually be related to small amphibians, like the Paratoad and Blastoad. In this hypothesis, the Dodogama was originally a toad-like creature that was able to gradually grow by specializing in ingesting Bioenergy.
Developer's Note: After the gauntlet that is the Elder's Recess portion of the story, the development team wanted to create a monster that would stand out as smaller and weaker than the Elder Dragons, an enemy the player would discover with relief and confidence. The Dodogama was then conceived as a way to illicit that feeling and as a relatively easy way to grind out an armor set for this part of the game. The explosive element was devised to add some flair to the fight, and the ability to detonate the rocks inside the Dodogamas mouth was a balancing decision. Design-wise, the Dodogama was based on the "full" state of the Great Jagras, but altered to reflect its ore-eating nature. Because the Dodogama is the only creature eating ore in the Recess, it has a monopoly on that food source, which Kaname Fujioka finds funny.
