Known habitat: Elder's Recess
Nergigante is an unusual Elder Dragon in many ways. It has only ever been sighted during the Elder Crossing and was considered a rare sight even then. That all changed when a Zorah Magdaros crossed into the New World, causing the Nergigante to pursue it relentlessly and reveal its bizarre ecology. Nergigante feeds on Bioenergy in order to fuel its regenerative abilities, and it prefers the purest energy available - the kind stored in the bodies of Elder Dragons. So the Nergigante actively preys on Elder Dragons, and pursued Zorah in order to feed on it. This abnormal behavior, as well as its power, earned it a spot in the Elder Dragon Classification. Nergigante isn't originally from the New World, and would only travel there during the Elder Crossing. After the most recent crossing however, it seemingly decided to settle down in the Elder's Recess. The Nergigante is not a picky eater: Just about anything can become its prey, and the New World Ecosystem struggled to adapt to this new presence. The local Gajalaka were particularily affected, as Nergigante had chosen to nest very close to their ancestral home. It is believed that the Gajalaka hold a grudge against it for that reason.
The key to Nergigantes power lies in the approximately 1800 spikes that grow on its back, head, wings, arms and tail. When broken, these spikes will regrow within moments, emerging first as brittle white spines before hardening into black metallic spires after prolonged exposure to air. Once hardened, these spikes repel most attacks, but they also become quite heavy. In order to maintain its speed, the Nergigante will try to regularily break off its own spikes to reduce their weight. This can be done by simply thrashing around, or by performing a spectacular maneuver: When its spikes are hard and heavy, and its wrath reaches a zenith, the Nergigante will fly up into the air before crashing down violently onto its target, breaking off nearly all of its spikes in the process. Some hunters have called this move "Ruinous Impulse". The spikes then begin regrowing again, and the cycle begins anew. Nergigante could actually grow even more spikes, as many of the cells on the underside of the dragon have the ability to generate spikes as well. But it is believed that these cells lie dormant to maximize mobility. One curious property of the spikes only reveals itself once they are shed. Researchers found that when discarded spikes were exposed to nutrients, they did not just grow - the cells inside of them began to multiply like those in an egg! This has led to the theory that Nergigante might reproduce asexually using its spikes, which grow into germ cells when the Nergigante experiences a surplus of energy. Once broken off, these germ spikes might then grow into a genetic clone of their parent. This might be the reason behind the Nergigantes dogged pursuit of energy-dense creatures such as Zorah Magdaros.
Developer's Note: The two main Monsters of Monster Hunter: Worlds story - Zorah Magdaros and Xeno'jiiva - are both big setpiece battles that are also deeply tied to the stories' mystery, so the development team felt that they needed another main Monster that could be fought in regular environments. They also had the other Elder Dragons such as Kushala Daora already in the game, so for this monster, they wanted it to have no element and instead be a brutal brawler that pressured the player through sheer physicality. Thus, the idea of Nergigante was born. The key phrase for its design was "destruction and rebirth", and the designers initially played around with various creepy ideas, including a monster with multiple faces. This concept was then simplified into the Nergigantes spikes - they grow and break, over and over, destruction and rebirth. This key phrase also inspired the idea of asexual reproduction.
