==Physiology and Abilities==
==Physiology and Abilities==

Pukei-Pukei are medium sized bird wyverns known by their light green scales and manes of vivid green feathers. They have yellow eyeballs that are speckled brown, thin vertical irises, orange cheeks, and deep green cresting adorning its head as if it were a mask. Pukei-Pukei have rubbery four-pronged wings with visible bones to each end, as well as some feathers and a spike on their wing arms. They have long sticky tongues and an equally long but thin multicolored tail.

Its scales and feathers will shift towards red coloring to intimidate foes and portray anger, as well as dullen to appear lesser than, and portray tiredness. Pukei-Pukei's chin pouch and cheeks will expand upon eating berries, and its tail massively inflates when filled with toxic fumes.

Pukei-Pukei are capable of attacking with their long elastic tongues, can spit poison out of its mouth, and spew poison fog out of its tail. Should it eat from certain berry plants, that toxic spit can crackle on impact and stun its foes.

{{MonsterDescription
|Description=A bird wyvern known to store toxins within its body. It uses its tongue like a whip and can stretch or shrink it at will, allowing it to grab up food. As a defense against threats, Pukei-Pukei have numerous toxic attacks. Keep an eye on both its mouth and tail!<br/>'''Threat Level: ★★★★'''<br/>The regurgitation of a Pukei-Pukei varies depending on what it has eaten: it may spread wider, linger on the ground, or even stun prey more easily. Check, therefore, that the monster's mouth and tail aren't swollen prior to engaging.

*Pukei-Pukei strangely shares wing patterns and feet type with [[Paolumu]], despite belonging to different classifications.

*If it eats Scatternuts, its spit attacks will have added Stun effect chance.

The Poison Bewitching Bird Pukei-Pukei (プケプケ, pukepuke) is a Bird Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter: World.

Physiology and Abilities

A bird wyvern known to store toxins within its body. It uses its tongue like a whip and can stretch or shrink it at will, allowing it to grab up food. As a defense against threats, Pukei-Pukei have numerous toxic attacks. Keep an eye on both its mouth and tail!
Threat Level: ★★★★
The regurgitation of a Pukei-Pukei varies depending on what it has eaten: it may spread wider, linger on the ground, or even stun prey more easily. Check, therefore, that the monster's mouth and tail aren't swollen prior to engaging.

From Pages 210-215:
Full length: approximately 1102.23 cm
Full height: approximately 338.27 cm
Foot size: approximately 148 cm
Known habitat: Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste

The Pukei-Pukei's feathers are covered in fine crystalline particles that cause them to change color depending on how they're angled. This allows it to alter its natural green camouflage in the event its environment changes: to appear larger and red to intimidate other monsters, or to appeal smaller and pale as it attempts to flee more fearsome threats. These modes of coloration reflect its varying behaviors in the face of intruders depending on the danger they pose. It is able to rapidly assess intruders with its large eyes, said to contain many more color-receptor cells than those of other creatures, that are capable of differentiating between many colors even in the dark.

Pukei-Pukei's feet are well adapted for grasping and holding. Though this would seem to suit it for a life among the treetops, clutching to round branches, it spends most of its time on the forest floor. It is speculated that its territory used to be in the canopy, but that it was forced lower by the migration of Rathalos to the New World long ago. It still returns to the canopy today during breeding season to find a Mernos nest with a vacant parent. There, it will lay its own egg in the nest. Upon hatching, the Pukei-Pukei chick will instinctively push out the Mernos eggs and receive exclusive care from its unwitting Mernos caretaker before leaving the nest to learn to fly and seek out vegetation for food.

Pukei-Pukei's tongue can stretch to be longer than four meters thanks to a well-developed hyoid and surrounding muscles. This tongue is so strong that a single person cannot forcibly stretch it. It uses this tongue both to attack invaders from a distance and to snatch food. Pukei-Pukei primarily eats plants, including Poisoncups, Sporepuffs, and Scatternuts. It will also store these plants in its elastic chin and tail, where it can mix them with a fluid produced in its poison sacs. Depending on the stored plant, the resulting mixture will have a variety of properties, from the mist-like spray from Sporepuffs to bursting poison bubbles from Scatternuts. It has even been been known to store rocks in its chin to spray at adversaries. When an internalized poisonous mixture is given time to ferment, it produces a toxic vapor that is stored in Pukei-Pukei's expanding tail to release from the tip as a last resort in combat. These behaviors, while providing both sustenance and defense, also assist the consumed plants in germinating and spreading around the environment. This may be why the areas around Pukei-Pukei nests have so many varieties of plants.

Developer's Note: Pukei-Pukei was originally intended to be the basic tutorial monster for new players, but that role went to Great Jagras instead. Instead, its purpose became teaching players to be more aware of their surroundings, especially vegetation and slinger ammunition, and how they can utilize them in combat. Its actions are designed to be exaggerated so players can easily read its intent. Its colors and changing form based on its emotion all help to serve this goal.

Notes

General Notes
  • Its head and wings (individual) can be broken, and its tail severed.
    • Severing Pukei-Pukei's tail will hinder its tail poison attacks.
  • Pukei-Pukei's roar is Weak. Level 3 Earplugs nullifies it. (Rise: Level 2 Earplugs / Level 1 Defiance nullifies it.)
  • Pukei-Pukei strangely shares wing patterns and feet type with Paolumu, despite belonging to different classifications.
  • Pukei-Pukei ranked 64th place in the Top Monster competition during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.
Monster Hunter: World
  • If it eats Scatternuts, its spit attacks will have added Stun effect chance.
  • In the crossover quest with The Witcher 3, "Trouble in the Ancient Forest," a wounded but alive Pukei-Pukei is trapped northwest of Area 8, nearby some Scatternuts and Redpit. Finding it starts the "Pukei-Pukei in Peril" sidequest.
    • Should the player free it, it will assist the player in fighting Leshen. If properly healed and protected, a bonus ending with the Pukei-Pukei and its Grimalkyne comrade is unlocked.
      • If Leshen or Jagras kills the bird wyvern, the side quest fails.
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Pukei-Pukei can appear in the Rampage, where it is considered a Targetter.
  • Since Scatternuts aren't present in this title, Pukei-Pukei eats from nearby ammo-producing berry plants for identical Stun effect.
  • Pukei-Pukei and Tobi-Kadachi both are notably more dangerous than their appearances in Monster Hunter: World, since more monsters are fought before them, and both are unlocked in LR 4★ quests rather than LR 3★.
  • Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak
  • In Master Rank, Pukei-Pukei gains a new attack where it runs flailing around (akin to Yian Kut-Ku), followed by more flailing with poison clouds being flung around.
  • Miscellaneous
  • The Amstrigian in Monster Hunter Wilds' second trailer was suspected by many to be a baby Pukei-Pukei, but officially debunked to be unrelated Endemic Life.
