Known habitat: Coral Highlands
Tzitzi-Ya-Ku is covered in purple, partially reflective scales that provide excellent camouflage on the plateaus of the Coral Highlands that it calls its home, especially when its sunbathing or sleeping. It is typically not aggressive, preferring to pass other creatures by, though it may attack those who stay in its line of sight too long. Its claws are the longest and sharpest of any Bird Wyvern in the New World. It uses these impressive claws to hunt, climb, and grip tight into the ground before taking off with long leaps.
Tzitzi-Ya-Ku has a specialized organ on its forehead which contains a substance capable of producing a flash. There are multiple theories as to the origin of this substance, including that it's made by Tztzi-Ya-Ku itself, or that it comes from luminescent coral, Flying Meduso, or some other organism. The produced flash reflects off of two flaps on its temples, each of which opens with the movement of two long bones, to blinding effect. The flash is so powerful it can even stun large monsters, though it is often used to send Raphinos, its favorite prey, crashing to the ground. Shamos especially hate this flash, and the two species can often be found fighting. Tzitzi-Ya-Ku collect shiny shells along the walls of its nest, which can reflect and enhance its flash, sometimes taking hunters by surprise. This behavior may be clever tactical planning, or it could be used to attract mates.
Developer's Note: Tzitzi-Ya-Ku was intended to interfere with hunts, but in a way that's potentially useful to the player. Its bioluminescent concept is rooted in the deepsea origins of the Coral Highlands. They wanted players to be able to identify and use safe areas behind the temple flaps to avoid the flash. They added shells to its nest to then make it harder to avoid, however the team didn't realize that players would typically have broken these flaps before the monster would retreat there.
