Help:Source Priority
The world of Monster Hunter is depicted across a variety of official media produced by many different people over a span of 20+ years. Sometimes there are inconsistencies between different sources of information. While this Wiki aims to make the source information as transparently digestible as possible, in some instances, such as a brief summary or infobox, a single source must be chosen. For these cases we've defined a system of "Source Priority" that establishes way of resolving informational conflicts.
- Consideration is given to the context of the information in each source to ensure it is truly in conflict. Is it presented as a rumor or legend? Is it coming from an in-universe source that is potentially unreliable? Resolutions achieved here will be the cleanest, and allow for a richer summary for readers.
- If a conflict remains, information from higher ranked source types takes priority over lower ranked source types in accordance with the following sequence:
- Main Series Games ("console" & "portable")
- Print Materials
- Web Materials
- Spin-off Games
- Other
- If the conflict is between sources within a single tier of source type, more recently released material takes priority over previously released information.
This Wiki also faces the challenge of working in the English language while the vast majority of Monster Hunter Sources are exclusively released in Japanese. As translation introduces another layer of uncertainty, an official localization is always preferred to any other method of translation, which we refer to together as "fan translation", even if this means utilizing information from a source at a lower tier. This Wiki strives to always make it clear whether information being cited is officially localized or fan translated, and we are always open to additional volunteers to help improve our translations.
When editing pages, please be sure to not replace information from a better ranked source with that from a lower ranked one, as it's easy to make these for errors. Feel free to reach out to Staff or other editors to try and track down the origin of possibly erroneous information. It should always be traceable to a source that can be ranked in this system.
